Turkey Creek Medical Center Now Offers Bariatrics Program

KNOXVILLE, TN (March 6, 2012) - Turkey Creek Medical Center is now home to the newest comprehensive surgical weight loss program in the region—the Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss.  The Center is designed to help patients who are unable to sustain significant weight loss, have weight-related medical issues and are ready to make a life change to become healthier. Bariatric surgeries will begin at Turkey Creek Medical Center, 10820 Parkside Drive, this month.

“The addition of this comprehensive surgical weight loss program is another example of the technology and expertise we are adding to our campus to support the community,” said Walt Chiles, III, MD, Chair of the Medical Staff Leadership Committee at Tennova Healthcare’s Turkey Creek Medical Center.  “Drs. Boyce and Williams are experts at bariatric surgery and this is a great service to offer our patients who struggle with their weight.”

Morbid obesity is a life-threatening disease that affects over 15 million people in the U.S.  A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that bariatric surgery improved or resolved type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol in the vast majority of morbidly obese patients. Most patients had lost 55 to 70 percent of their excess weight one year after bariatric surgery.

A “Scarless” Approach to Surgery

The Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Turkey Creek Medical Center will offer single site robotic surgery, which is an advanced minimally invasive surgical technique in which the surgeon operates through a single incision instead of the traditional four or more laparoscopic incisions. The procedure is performed entirely through the umbilicus (belly button), leaving patients with minimal or no visible scar.  Single incision robotic surgery leaves the patient with the potential for less post-operative pain, quicker recovery time and reduced risk of wound site infections.

Bariatric and gall bladder surgical procedures can be performed using this approach, but not all patients are candidates. The determination depends on many factors, including the size of the liver, Body Mass Index (BMI) and previous surgeries.

Two very experienced surgeons—Stephen Boyce, M.D., and K. Robert Williams, M.D.—will be performing surgical weight loss procedures at Turkey Creek Medical Center:

With more than 20 years experience and having completed thousands of weight loss surgical procedures, Stephen Boyce, M.D., is the most experienced weight loss surgeon in East Tennessee. Dr. Boyce’s practice, the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery (a part of Premier Surgical Associates), had its beginning in 2003 and swiftly became designated as a Center of Excellence in 2005. Due to his extensive training and experience, Dr. Boyce is qualified to offer all approved bariatric operations.

“We are very excited about starting the surgical weight loss program at Turkey Creek Medical Center,” said Dr. Boyce.  “In my 20 years of performing these procedures, the advancements in technology and success rates are at an all time high and we are looking forward to offering our services to the community.”

Robert Williams, M.D. is a fellowship-trained minimally invasive bariatric surgeon and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. In practice, his interests include all aspects of general surgery with an emphasis on the surgical treatment of obesity and reflux. Dr. Williams has performed nearly 800 bariatric surgeries; most of these have been laparoscopic. His experience and training qualify him to offer all approved bariatric surgeries.

“Using cutting edge techniques and equipment, we are seeing lower complication rates and quicker recovery times, said Dr. Williams.  “We offer a variety of different procedures to meet each patient’s needs and individual goals.”
