Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Newport Medical Center Earn 4-Star Quality Rating by CMS
2/24/2020
KNOXVILLE, TN (February 24, 2020) – Tennova Healthcare’s Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Newport Medical Center have been recognized as four-star hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), according to a joint announcement from Colin McRae, CEO of Jefferson Memorial Hospital, and Matthew Littlejohn, CEO of Newport Medical Center.
The two Tennova hospitals are among 1,136 facilities nationwide—and the only hospitals in the Lakeway area—to receive a four-star overall rating. The CMS quality rating scale ranges from one to five stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures.
Both Newport Medical Center and Jefferson Memorial Hospital exceed the national average in the quality measure for readmissions. Additionally, the hospitals each perform in line with the national average in all six remaining categories: patient experience, safety, effectiveness of care, timeliness, mortality, and efficient use of medical imaging.
“We are committed to providing safe, quality care to every patient—every day,” McRae said. “Our experienced physicians, nurses and other clinical staff work to continually improve care, and measurements like this help us identify progress and opportunities to further enhance and advance care.”
CMS developed the quality rating system to help consumers make decisions on where to receive care. Each year, CMS rates the nation’s Medicare-certified hospitals and publishes the star ratings on its “Hospital Compare” website (www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare). The website provides additional details on the rating system and quality measures.
“At Tennova, we have teams in place that report weekly on specific areas of improvement, such as patient experience and safety indicators,” Littlejohn said. “From those reports, our hospitals are able to focus on opportunities to improve. It truly takes a dedicated team to move from three stars to four stars.”
