Raising Awareness for Organ and Tissue Donation
4/23/2018
April is designated as National Donate Life Month. Tennova Healthcare - Harton held a ceremony to raise the flag to assist in raising awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation. Each April at Harton, the Donate Life flag is proudly raised on the flag pole near the Jackson Street entrance. The flag serves as a visual reminder of the month’s observance, commemorates those who have generously donated organs and tissue, and recognizes the recipients of the life changing donations.
“Every 10 minutes a name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list,” states Paula Bell, RN, BSN, Tennova Healthcare – Harton Quality Coordinator. “One organ donor can save eight lives; one tissue donor can restore up to 50 lives.” Bell added, “We hope that by community members seeing the flag and reading the information we share, they are moved to help save lives by making the choice to become organ and tissue donors.”
As of August 2017, there were 116,000 men, women and children on the national transplant waiting list. To register to be an organ donor, check “yes” when applying for or renewing your driver’s license. You can also document your decision to be an organ, eye or tissue donor online by visiting the Donate Life Tennessee web site at donatelifetn.org. Online registration at donatelifetn.org takes less than five minutes.
